Day 250

"Quickie Sketches at Duly Noted First Rehearsal"  Art journal, ink (plus "cartoony" embellishments in pencil by Stacey).

Day 248

"Farm Between Tweed and Belleville". Art journal, watercolour.

I came home from the cottage today. It was late afternoon as I was driving the stretch on Highway 37 between Tweed and Belleville, so I was watching for beautiful light. I pulled over when I saw this farm and did a quick drawing, then added the paint when I got home (late!), before I even unpacked the car.

Day 247

"En Route to Wakefield". Art journal, watercolour

I had a little outing today; I went from the cottage to Wakefield, QC, about a half hour away, to meet an old friend for lunch. On Hwy 366 just east of Wakefield, you come over the crest of a hill and are suddenly presented with a lovely pastoral panorama. That's what I tried to capture here.

Day 246

"Weather Coming". Pastel, 5 x 5"

I had trouble getting started today, but once I did, I managed to do these two little pastel landscapes.

"Green Lake"  Pastel, 9 x 7"

Day 245

Day 245

The serenity of this scene is deceptive. If you were actually standing there looking at this old barn, there would be four lanes of traffic zooming by literally right behind you.

Day 244

"Kevin's Kayak". Pastel, 12 X 16"

In honour of my dear friend Kevin's birthday today, I tried to render in pastel a beautiful photo that he took from his kayak on Lake Ontario. Quite a challenge, as the photo itself is gorgeous. Happy birthday, Kevin!

Today marks two-thirds of the way through my #klh366 project. 122 days to go!

Day 243

"View of Green Lake" Art journal, watercolour and ink

Today I had a little kayak excursion to the next lake where there is a place to picnic, swim, etc. I did the shape drawing of the view while I was there, and painted it when I got back.

Day 242

"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year". Art journal, watercolour.

This is my favourite time of year; I call it peaches-corn-tomato season. In fact, that's what I had for supper tonight.

Day 241

"Back at Grand Lake"  Art journal, watercolour

An attempt to evoke the gorgeous cloudscape over the lake when I arrived at the cottage this evening.

Day 240

"Edna's Zinnias on Annie's Doily". Art journal, ink and watercolour.

I am visiting my folks in Trenton en route to the cottage. There are always fresh flowers to sketch here. My grandmother (Annie) made the little doily.

Day 238

"Make Your Mark". Art journal, watercolour

I was enjoying some spontaneous mark-making with a certain brush (size 14 flat).

Day 234

Tom Hall (1920-1981), circa 1975.  Art journal, pencil.

Early in the year I was drawing portraits of close friends and family on their birthdays, but this nice habit fell by the wayside when I started a part-time job and had less time to spare. So I have missed a few. But today is my father's birthday, and I have been anticipating doing this portrait for quite a while. It's from a beautiful photograph taken by my sister Alison.

Day 233

"The Tragically Hip final concert"  Art journal, ink and watercolour

I sketched this while watching on TV (along with most of Canada, felt like) The Tragically Hip's last-ever concert, then added some watercolour to try to convey some of the emotional impact. I am more of a fairweather fan than a die-hard one, if I can put it that way, so this is the first time I have seen them perform. It was quite something, and yet another reminder that there's "no dress rehearsal; this is our life."

Day 232: CAA Magazine Challenge #4

"Inspired?"  Art journal, magazine collage

The latest issue of the CAA (Canadian Auto Association) Magazine arrived in my mailbox today, so I took on my usual challenge: choose whichever images grab me and put them together somehow. This one contains a nod to the Olympic Games.

Challenge #1 was on Day 7, #2 on Day 37, and #3 on Day 140.
